The Mysterious Alt Tag

Easily Explained

  • Yes, you need them

  • No, they are not automatically generated (don’t count on using the image file name)

  • Yes, you need to be thoughtful when adding your alt tags to your images

  • No, you won’t see the alt tag unless you turn off your browser images (some people need to do this)

  • Yes, alt tags are easy to add, particularly on a Squarespace website

Consider that alt tags (or “alternative text” for images) are not only recommended to improve your SEO, but they are also very important to those who need to use assistive screen readers when they view your website.

Follow these best practices recommended by both Squarespace & Google:

Be descriptive and helpful. How would you describe this image to someone who couldn’t see it?

Keep the text short, typically twelve words or fewer.

Optimize your text for search by incorporating keywords, but avoid keyword stuffing.

Write in real sentences; don’t use hyphens to separate words.

You can omit words like “the” and “a,” and terms like “photo” or “picture.” For example, instead of a picture of a green vase, use green vase.

I Know How This Works. I Can Help.
To get an “alt tag” quote, all I need is access to your current, live website.

Alt Tags Created by Sue start at $300.

The minimum Mysterious Alt Tag service is an audit of your website’s current alt tags.

If you have a website with 20 pages or more, it’s going to take me more time to audit, so expect the fee to be a bit more, depending on how enormous your website is.

If you have a website with more than 30 images, I will want to get an exact number so I’ll be able to provide you with an accurate fee. I believe in “no surprises” for either of us.

My minimum service also includes a conference call, email, or in-person visit (if you come to Morro Bay and want to meet locally).

During our meeting (up to 30 minutes), I’ll ask a bunch of questions about your business.

Within 5 business days (or less), you will receive my recommendations.
